A Magically Empty Space
Technology must not disrupt the architectural purity of the interior; all utility systems are routed to the basement. It is here, beneath the stairs, that the utility room and bathroom are located. This solution made it possible to free up the main living space, which has a total volume of 125 m³.
The upper space thus remains absolutely uncluttered, symmetrical, and enchantingly empty and open. The ground-floor living area contains only the essentials—a kitchen, a fireplace, and a table—with a sleeping loft above. Both levels, of course, provide access to the outdoor terraces.
As architect David Kubík concludes: “The result is a structure that fully fulfills its formal purpose, yet in its essence and execution transcends the horizon of the ordinary. A quintessential 21st-century fisherman’s lodge.”

A Sun-Powered Toy
A small pond. Small hills. The picturesque Šumava countryside below the village of Dobrá Voda. A structure that cleverly defies expectations. From the perspective of architects Martin Rajniš and David Kubík, it is a sophisticated “sun-powered toy” that embodies beauty, quality of life, and freedom in the broadest possible context. As Prof. Ing. arch. Martin Rajniš likes to summarize: “Architecture as magic and nothing.”

Light Sculpture
The greatest charm of the Rybářská Bastion lies in its kinetic interplay of light and its emotional variability. We are slaves to light! The multi-layered design of the building envelope allows the terraces to be folded back on three sides. This multiplies the usable area on both residential floors.
People can spread out and enjoy privacy despite the limited space, thereby making the area around the house feel like home. Furthermore, when tilted out, the movable terraces function as effective shading. When closed, on the other hand, they protect the house from unwanted intrusion and serve to block out light at night.
A wooden cube floating above the water’s surface
The wooden cube, with minimum dimensions of 5.5 × 5.5 × 5.5 meters, proudly carves its presence into the landscape. It secretly features a single recessed underground level. Thanks to the sloping terrain, the structure appears to levitate above the pond’s shore, and its reflection on the water’s surface mirrors the poetry of the West Bohemian landscape.
Access to the Fisherman’s Bastion leads along an inconspicuous dirt road, from which one enters through one of the movable terraces. This terrace can be elegantly lowered from a vertical to a horizontal position. In this way, the architects revive the ancient tradition of drawbridges found in medieval water fortresses with a playful touch and a high-tech style.
Energy Island – Living in Harmony with Nature
OFF GRID. The project’s mantra. The house is designed as a fully self-sufficient off-grid system. It is powered by 25 square meters of solar panels. The energy generated is stored in a battery bank and supplies lighting, the refrigerator, and the water pump. Surplus energy heats water in a boiler combined with a storage tank for the radiators.
The building is temperature-controlled year-round; however, the main source of thermal comfort is a wood-burning stove with a hot-water insert. The stove transfers heat to a storage tank in the basement, from which it is distributed to radiators in the living area, ensuring constant thermal comfort even at night when the stove goes out. The source of crystal-clear water is the local Adam’s Spring, which also feeds the pond.
